The San Francisco 49ers will host the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game on Sunday, seeking their first Super Bowl appearance since winning the Lombardi Trophy in 1995, and are the NFL pick to represent the NFC. The Niners dispensed of the Minnesota Vikings last week, living up to the NFL prediction for the game. Now the top-seeded 49ers take on the No. 2 seed Packers, and we have an NFL preview of the game.
San Francisco held the Vikings to just 172 yards passing and 21 yards rushing in the divisional round rout. Jimmy Garoppolo only threw for 131 yards, but the three-headed monster of Tevin Coleman, Matt Brieda and Raheem Mostert rushed for a combined 180 yards and two touchdowns on the day.
The Packers had to grind out their win in the divisional round as the Seattle Seahawks were determined to not go quietly. After building a 21-3 halftime lead, Green Bay was outscored 20-7 in the second but held on for a 28-23 victory in the friendly confines of Lambeau Field.
These two teams went head to head in the regular season, also in San Francisco, where the Niners defeated the Packers 37-8. Garoppolo threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense held Aaron Rodgers to just 103 yards passing. George Kittle torched the Packers secondary for six catches for 219 yards and a score.
Our NFL pick and prediction: The 49ers are 7.5-point favorites at home, with the over/under set at 45.
Packing Up And Heading West
Despite the Week 10 thrashing at the hands of the Niners, Green Bay has been solid the entire season. The Packers have covered in 11 of 17 games this season and were 6-1 straight up in games on the road not played in San Francisco.
The Packers’ ATS away from Lambeau was 5-3, and they have gone over the total in 10 of their 17 games this season, including four of their last five games.
Is The Mine Played Out?
San Francisco has covered in 10 of its 17 games on the season, having more success against the spread on the road than at home. The Niners are just 4-4-1 at home while a sterling 6-2 on the road.
The total has gone over in five of San Francisco’s nine home games as well as in seven of its last 10 against NFC opponents.
Green Bay Packers vs. San Francisco 49ers NFL Pick and Prediction
It has been difficult to get on this San Francisco train this season. Kyle Shanahan obviously has his team up to snuff, and it is hard to dispell the results from the game that took place two months ago.
The Packers’ offense has not exactly been elite in recent weeks as their defense has been able to hold teams bay. Their opponents, however, have not been elite by any means up until last week’s matchup with Seattle.
That Seahawks defense is not on the same level as this Niners defense though. Rodgers is great enough to keep the game within a touchdown, so take the Packers to cover the 7.5 points even if they don’t win. And go with the over.
