The countdown to the off-season has officially begun for both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Atlanta Falcons as they prepare to face off in Week 16 of the NFL Schedule. Entering this contest the Jaguars and Falcons both sit at 5-9 on the year while each are sitting in the bottom of their respective divisions. Despite the records, both teams have shown at times their ability to put together strong performances including during Week 15, where the Falcons used a late touchdown with less than a minute left from Matt Ryan to Julio Jones to knock off the San Francisco 49ers.
Entering this contest, the Falcons have struggled to shut down opponents this year on the defensive side of the ball allowing a minimum 26 points in seven of their eight losses this season. In those seven losses, Matt Ryan and the offense has played well enough for the team to win. On the year, Ryan has completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 3,769 yards to go with 24 touchdowns to just 12 inceptions. Meanwhile, the Jaguars have had a difficult time finding the quarterback of the future after electing to sign Nick Foles during the off-season.
In addition, to finding consistent play on offensive, the front office of the Jaguars have turned their attention to future this season electing to trade All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and firing vice president Tom Coughlin. Heading into Week 16, the Falcons are a seven point favor playing at home, while the over/under sits at 46.5. Here is an NFL Game Preview and NFL Prediction for the upcoming matchup between the Jaguars and Falcons.
Win the Turnover Battle
The Atlanta Falcons enter this contest winners of two straight and four of their last six overall contests. Over their last two contests, the Falcons offense has protected the ball turning it over just one time over the two game stretch. Meanwhile the Falcons defense has dominated in the two wins forcing a combined six turnovers (four against the Carolina Panthers, two against the San Francisco 49ers). In each of those contests, the Falcons committed fewer turnovers.
Continue to Play Defense
Despite the disappointing record entering week 16, the Jaguars have played solid football this season on the defensive side of the ball. Entering this contest, the Jaguars have allowed fewer than 20 points in five contests, over that stretch the team has won just two of the five contests. If the team can step up on defense against the Falcons on Sunday, the team will be in the contest till the final whistle. In the teams week 15 win against the Oakland Raiders, the Jaguars were able to hold the Raiders to three field goals in three of the teams four trips into the red zone.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Atlanta Falcons NFL Pick and Prediction
This will mark the seventh overall meeting between the two teams including their first meeting since back during the 2015 season. In this series both teams have won three games while the home team has won two of their three home contests. While the home field advantage leans towards the Jaguars, the inconsistent play late in the season compared to the success of the Falcons over the past two weeks makes them a difficult pick in this contest.
Entering this contest the sports betting statistics lead to the Falcons as the Jaguars have covered the spread in just one of their six contests as an underdog while the Falcons have covered the spread in five straight contests in the month of December. Take the Falcons at -7 at home as your NFL pick for Week 16.
