The XFL pick made it through Week 1 and just like that Week 2 is upon us. The first game on the Week 2 schedule pits the New York Guardians against the DC Defenders. Both teams came out of the first weekend with double-digit wins and are looking to stay undefeated in a game to be played at Audi Field in Washington, DC. The game kicks off at 2pm ET and will be televised on ABC.
The Guardians started their season against the Tampa Bay Vipers on home turf at Metlife Stadium in front of a crowd of 17,000 people and did not disappoint. In one of the league’s new rules, the home team elects who receives the ball first and the Guardians took the ball to start. They moved down the field and scored on a quarterback sneak by quarterback Matt McGloin.
On the other side of things, the Vipers were a bit disjointed offensively throughout much of the game. Although they moved the ball effectively at times, there were too many mistakes and turnovers, especially in the red zone that caused them problems in this game.
For the Defenders, their 31 points was the most scored by any XFL team in Week 1 as they took a 12 point win over the Seattle Dragons. Quarterback Cardale Jones had a solid game for DC with 235 yards passing, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Former NFL receiver Eli Rogers hauled in 6 passes to lead the Defenders.
But it was turnovers that were the story of this game, as Seattle turned it over 3 times, 2 on interceptions, to seal the win. The Defenders will stay at home in Week 2 as they host the New York Guardians.
How will things change in Week 2?
Now that defensive coordinators have some film to review, chances are good that we may see them become more of a factor in the 2nd week of the season. Conversely, offensive coordinators have also had a look at the defensive schemes and may find some new ways to score points. It will be interesting to see which way it goes.
Which player may have a breakout game?
In this game, the Defenders running back Donnell Pumphrey was held in check, with just 5 rushing yards in 4 attempts. Expect to see Pumphrey much more involved in the Defender’s offense.
NY Guardians vs. DC Defenders XFL Pick and Prediction
The Defenders are the early XFL pick to win this one after their Week 1 performance. Jones was solid at quarterback and the defense chipped in with two scores of their own. But the Guardians showed some defense of their own limiting the Vipers to just 3 points. They totalled 5 sacks, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Given the defense shown by both teams in Week 1, the under looks like a good bet with the total set at 49 points.
