The end of the 2020 NFL Schedule has arrived with two teams surviving to compete in Super Bowl LIV at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. For these two teams it has been a whirl wind from the opening kickoff of the 2020 NFL season through the AFC and NFC Championship games. In the end the last two teams standing are the San Francisco 49ers representing the NFC conference and the Kansas City Chiefs representing the AFC conference.
For the Chiefs after a hot start to open up the year, a devastating leg injury to All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes during the teams Week 7 win against the Denver Broncos put their season in jeopardy. Despite the negative initial response of the leg injury, Mahomes returned a few weeks later leading the Chiefs to the AFC West title and the second overall spot in the conference. Now after throwing for 615 yards and eight touchdowns, the Chiefs will be heading to their first Super Bowl since winning Super Bowl IV back on January 11th, 1970.
Meanwhile the 49ers after finishing 31st in the NFL in 2019 and taking home the number two overall pick during the 2019 NFL draft, the 49ers rebounded by winning 13 games during the regular season while taking home the top spot in the NFC conference. The 49ers used a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo and their top draft pick Nick Bosa to dominate on both sides of the football. Garoppolo who missed all but three games during the 2018 NFL season, rebounded in 2019 throwing for nearly 4,000 yards to go with 27 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball Bosa has led a 49ers defense that ranks near the top overall while forcing three sacks during the 2019 NFL playoffs.
Heading into Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs are a 1.5 point favor on the road at Hard Rock Stadium, while the over/under sits at 54. Here is an NFL Super Bowl LIV Game Preview and NFL Super Bowl Prediction for the upcoming matchup between the 49ers and Chiefs on February 2nd, 2020.
Ride the Bosa and Defensive Train
As sports handicappers are looking at a high scoring affair (over/under at 54 points), Super Bowl LIV has the potential to be a defense battle based on the success the 49ers have had this year. Heading into Super Bowl, the 49ers defense has been brilliant for most of the season defeating some of the top quarterbacks in the NFL including Russell Wilson, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers (twice) while shutting down Lamar Jackson in one of the best regular season games of the year. Bosa has been brilliant this post season forcing 10 tackles and three sacks.
Overall the 49ers defense has allowed just 30 points again two of the NFL’s top offenses this season. In this contest, the 49ers will have to limit the big play potential of the Chiefs passing attack while putting pressure on Mahomes early and often forcing the team to run the football.
Shut Down the Run
The Chiefs have been an interesting team for most of the season with one of the NFL’s top offensive attacks and one of the league’s most inconsistent defenses. While many sports handicappers and NFL experts expect the Chiefs to put points on the board, the 49ers may have the answer to limiting their production. Despite the potential success, the Chiefs defense will be key in this matchup including limiting the running attack of the 49ers.
Entering the Super Bowl, the 49ers offense has rallied behind their rushing attack of Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert. In the team’s two wins, the 49ers have rushed for 471 yards on 89 carries with six touchdowns while the passing attack has thrown for 208 yards with one touchdown and one interception on 17 of 27 attempts. If the Chiefs can limit the running attack it will put pressure on Garoppolo while possible giving them more clock time to work on offense.
San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs NFL Pick and Prediction
The 49ers and Chiefs head to Florida to face off in what has the potential to be on exciting Super Bowl. For these two teams, they both enter this contest hot and two teams that have performed well away from their home stadiums. Both the 49ers and Chiefs have won seven of their first eight road contests of the season straight up while posting a 6-2 record against the spread.
Looking a little deeper into the betting trends, the Chiefs have posted a 7-0 record against the spread as well as winning straight up as the favorite. However the 49ers have struggled covering the spread after covering spreads in two consecutive games dating back a few NFL seasons. Over that stretch the 49ers have covered the spread in just three of their 18 contests after covering the spreads in two straight cotests. While both these teams have the talent on both sides of the ball, the edge in this contest must go to the 49ers based on their recent success on the defensive side of the ball. Take the 49ers as your 2020 NFL Super Bowl Pick.
