A pair of 1-0 teams will meet in Week 2 of the XFL schedule when the St Louis Battlehawks take on the Houston Roughnecks. We preview the game with XFL pick and prediction. The game is scheduled for Sunday, February 16th at 6 p.m. ET and will be played at the home of the Roughnecks, TDECU Stadium in Houston. The game will be carried on FS1.
Both teams will feature quarterbacks who surprised many people in Week 1 with strong performances. Phillip Walker, better known as P.J., had arguably the best performance of any XFL quarterback by passing for four touchdowns and 272 yards. An undrafted player out of college, the former Temple quarterback looks like he could be a breakout performer. His size was most likely a hindrance to his NFL chances, but the 5’11” Walker didn’t let it bother him against the L.A. Wildcats, as he led his team to a 37-17 victory.
For the Battlehawks, it was quarterback Jordan Ta’amu who was sharp in his team’s 15=9 win over the Dallas Renegades. He completed 20 of 27 passes for 209 yards and 1 touchdown. The 6’3” Ta’amu played his college ball at Ole Miss and like Walker, was undrafted. The Battlehawks also got a strong performance from former NFL running back Matt Jones. Jones led all XFL backs in Week 1 with 21 carries for 85 yards.
What else did we learn from these team’s in Week 1?
Another former NFL player was a force in Week 1 for the Roughnecks. Kony Ealy, who played defensive end for the Carolina Panthers, was all over the field in Week 1. Ealy had two tackles for loss, a half sack and five quarterback hurries.
St Louis will have their defense tested by Houston in this one. That means that leading tacklers Terence Garvin and Dexter McCoil will need repeat performances. Both accounted for 8 tackles and McCoil also added a sack.
What do we know about the Head Coaches?
The Roughnecks are coached by June Jones, a familiar name to college, CFL and NFL fans. He was one of the original innovators on the Run N Shoot offense. The Battlehawks Head Coach is Jonathan Hayes, a former NFL tight end. Hayes was a former assistant coach with the Oklahoma Sooners and the Cincinnati Bengals.
St Louis Battlehawks vs. Houston Roughnecks XFL Pick and Prediction
The early line XFL pick for this game shows the Roughnecks as a 7.5 point favorite, while the point totals are set at 51. Chances are good that it may take a few weeks for the league to figure out how to defend the June Jones offense. Therefore, I’m expecting them to put some points on the board. However, if the Battlehawks can make a defensive stand or two, this game should be closer than the spread. I’m thinking Houston gets the win but may not cover the spread.
